Non-working public holidays in China for 2023

The General Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China released the official public holiday schedule in China for 2023 on December 9, 2022 (official source link).

By tradition, the holiday schedule includes two major week-long holidays, often referred to as the "Golden Week": the Spring Festival (also known as Chinese New Year) and National Day.

According to the Chinese calendar, Chinese New Year begins on January 22, 2023. That day marks the beginning of the Year of the Rabbit, more specifically, the Water Rabbit.

In 2023, the Spring Festival is observed from January 21 to January 27, while National Day falls from September 29 to October 6, with the Mid-Autumn Festival taking place during the same period.

It is well known that Saturdays and Sundays are often designated as additional official workdays in China to make up for long holiday breaks.

For example, in 2023, Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29 were designated as official workdays to partially make up for the seven days off for the Spring Festival, while Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8 were designated as official workdays to compensate for the National Day holiday break.

Private companies in China, however, have the right to set their own schedules β€” meaning they may allow additional days off β€” as long as they follow the official holiday calendar.

Since very few people in China work during the seven days after the New Year holidays, we will also be closed for Chinese New Year from January 21 to February 6, 2023.
