What happened to 11,720 Chinese company websites?
Between 2010 and 2014, we collected websites from 11,720 Chinese companies listed on Alibaba — but only those that also had their own independent websites, which at the time was considered a sign of a more serious and established business.
In 2023, we checked every single link. The results were shocking: 60.5% of those companies no longer exist. Some websites were shut down, some domains expired, and many were later taken over by gambling or suspicious websites.
The companies were divided into 34 categories. The highest survival rates were found in the chemical industry (56%) and energy sector (55%). The biggest decline was in clothing, where only 21.67% of companies are still active today, followed by footwear with just 25.28%.
Out of 11,720 Chinese companies recorded between 2010 and 2014, 60.5% had disappeared by 2023 — more than 7,000 websites were shut down, abandoned, taken over, or simply no longer working.
