Specialized cities and industrial centers in China
In China, there are cities and industrial centers that specialize in producing certain types of products. When you know where things are made, you can much more easily reach the right suppliers and get better buying conditions.
For example, in Yiwu you can find a wide range of small items and accessories, in Shenzhen a large part of the world's electronics is produced, and Guangzhou is known for textiles and fashion.
That's why it's important to know where to look for products, because it saves you time, money, and a lot of unnecessary wandering.
What separates a good agent from someone who only occasionally works in China is that they know where to look for what and where many manufacturers of a certain type of product are concentrated.
Recently, our well-known, regular customer contacted us and announced his trip to China, wanting us to help him find a specific type of stone.
When customers come to China, they usually don't want to leave their comfort zone. They consider visiting a trade show as enough. Trade shows are located in big cities, so there's not much wandering. You know where everything is, no exhausting car rides across China or eating in worker cafeterias (which you'll have if you go to rural areas). Our client started with the idea that we wouldn't go outside the big city. There are plenty of stone manufacturers in Guangzhou and Foshan, which are relatively close. Besides, Foshan is one of the ceramic centers in China, and we assumed we'd find what we're looking for there.
And we did. After two working days, we found the product we were looking for, where both the price and quality satisfied the client, but... On our suggestion, the client agreed to go deeper into the "jungle," go on an adventure outside the city, and visit places where his product is mass-produced.
Real example: searching for stone
After a short flight and a few hours by car, we reach our destination. What you see is almost unreal for someone coming from Europe. Imagine driving on a highway through a populated area, with stone manufacturers lined up one after another on both the left and right sides. Some are smaller, some larger, but they're all organized the same way. In the first row by the road are offices, and next to them is the product they offer, stacked up. In the halls behind them are the production facilities, the factories. And all of them one next to the other for kilometers β on both sides of the road, you see an incredible number of stone manufacturers.
In two days, we visited a large number of sellers. It's impossible to visit all of them, but what we visited was more than enough.
They all have the same or very similar products and compete with each other for every customer. Many of them don't show up at trade shows, at least not regularly every year, but each of them can offer you satisfactory quality at a favorable price, for which you can negotiate on the spot and set your own terms, stone colors, dimensions, material hardness, and so on.

- Bigger selection β in a small area you have dozens or hundreds of companies offering similar products.

Challenges of going to production centers
If you plan to visit these parts of China, forget about the comfort of luxury restaurants.
We enjoyed lunch at a worker's restaurant, where our hosts kindly warned us that food is eaten with chopsticks and that there's only one spoon and one fork in the entire restaurant. The toilet was a classic squat toilet, without a flush tank β simple, but authentic.
In addition to the above, prepare for the following:
- Distance β many centers are located far from big cities and require extra flights or long drives.
- Limited conditions β worker restaurants, basic accommodation, and minimal infrastructure aren't for everyone.
- Language barrier β manufacturers outside big cities almost don't speak English at all.
- Cultural differences β negotiation, food, and daily habits can be challenging without local help.
- Time organization β it's impossible to visit all companies, so you need to know how to choose the right ones.
- Need for expert help β without an agent or a guide/translator, it's hard to navigate, assess quality, and make the right deal.
Conclusion: everything we saw
After the exhausting trip, we returned to the city and tried to grasp the scale of everything we saw. We had the feeling we traveled 10β15 kilometers just on one street where companies were lined up one after another.
Since it was impossible to visit everyone, we asked Baidu (the Chinese Google) how long that street actually is. The answer shocked us β around 50 kilometers!
Imagine driving on a highway for a full 50 kilometers, and on both the left and right sides you see only stone manufacturers β blocks, slabs, pillars, fences, figuresβ¦ whatever you can think of. The sight is truly unreal.
Those are the places where you should really look for suppliers. Many of them show up at trade shows, but not all. Exactly those who work mainly for the domestic market or just want to break into the foreign market can and want to offer you the best combination of price and quality.
