Websites of Chinese Companies – How Many Have Disappeared?

Between 2010 and 2014, we collected websites of 11,720 Chinese companies from Alibaba – only those that, in addition to their Alibaba profile, also had their own company website, which at the time was considered a sign of a serious business.

In 2023, we checked every single link. The result was shocking: 60.5% of these companies no longer exist online. Some websites were shut down, some domains expired, and many were taken over by betting sites and suspicious content.

The companies were grouped into 34 categories. The highest “survival rate” was in the chemicals sector (56%) and energy (55%). The biggest drop was in the clothing industry – today only 21.67% of the original companies are still active – and in footwear, with just 25.28% remaining.

These figures are not “statistics for the sake of statistics” — they clearly show how high the risk is when buying from China on your own, without proper supplier verification.
